Where Color Falls
Color Falls explores a more spontaneous side of my artistic process, created with fluid acrylics on watercolor paper. Inspired by the misty waterfalls and lush landscapes of the Pacific Northwest, the painting developed through flowing layers of blue, green, violet, gold, and turquoise rather than a tightly controlled plan. Soft passages of color surround the luminous waterfall, while loosely suggested evergreens and scattered rocks give the scene structure without taking away from its atmospheric quality. The unexpected mingling of color became one of my favorite parts of the piece, creating an almost rainbow-like glow within the surrounding mist. Color Falls represents my continued exploration beyond traditional watercolor—experimenting with different materials, larger brushes, freer movement, and allowing the paint itself to help determine where a painting goes. Echoes of the Journey
Echoes of the Journey is an original transparent watercolor inspired by family photographs from the early 1900s and the rolling countryside near Garfield in Whitman County, Washington. My great-grandparents, Arthur and Mary Nepean, married in 1896 and made their home in Garfield, where Arthur raised race horses and riding became an important part of family life. A treasured photograph of a family member riding Tempo, one of Arthur’s spirited race horses, helped inspire the lone horseman traveling through this peaceful landscape. Rather than recreate the historic photographs, I used them as a starting point for an imagined scene of softly rolling hills, golden grasses, distant blue-violet ridges, and warm morning light. The winding trail and solitary rider suggest a journey through both landscape and memory, while the expansive setting reflects the quiet beauty of eastern Washington’s Palouse country. Echoes of the Journey is a personal tribute to family heritage, horses, and the landscapes that connect generations across time.
