Beyond Black and White
Beyond Black and White captures a giant panda in a quiet moment, surrounded by an expressive field of color and texture. Inspired by a panda I photographed during a summer visit to the San Diego Zoo with my daughters and granddaughter, I reimagined the original sleepy pose to bring the panda upright and into gentle connection with the viewer.
Rather than relying on traditional black and white, I explored granulating watercolor pigments throughout the panda and its surroundings. Deep blue-violets, turquoise, warm golds and earthy tones mingle and separate across the paper, while loose washes, blooms, splatters and preserved whites create movement and spontaneity. The panda remains immediately recognizable, yet its edges occasionally dissolve into the abstract background, allowing realism and experimentation to meet.

Colors of the Wild captures the strength and presence of an elephant through an expressive approach to color and watercolor.
